WTF is Wrong with Steven Ybarra?

Fri May 09, 2008 at 05:12:07 PM PDT

Most super delegates have a very difficult choice to make. Some will base it on issues, others on charisma, yet others on deep and complex considerations involving constituents, politics and electability.

But not California lawyer and Democratic Party super delegate Steven Ybarra. No, his deep contemplation begins and ends with one thing: cash.

That's right. Cash.

Yes, when Steven Ybarra gets to Denver, he will cast his vote for the first candidate to give him a cool $20 million.

The Democratic National Committee member doesn't parse his words when it comes to what he wants from Barack Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton - an ironclad promise to spend that heady amount to register Mexican-American voters and get them to the polls in November.

In a telephone interview Wednesday, he said he plans to remain undecided in the tight contest until "someone shows me the money."

Now, I think it's great Ybarra wants to raise $20 million to register over one million Mexican-American voters in swing states such as New Mexico, Colorado and Florida. But couldn't he have simply called up the Obama campaign and said, "Hey, let's work together to raise money and register a million Mexican-American voters?"

No, instead he decides to sell his super delegate vote, and the first thing we hear of it is via the Associated Press. Us, and all the rest of the world, who now thinks it's OK for Democratic Party super delegates to sell their votes. Nice. Nothing like undermining one of the most fantastically democratic primary elections in history by selling your super delegate vote.

Is $20 million a lot to ask?

In 2004, "they spent a billion to lose," he said.

And thanks for pointing that out, too, Steven.

Who the hell made this guy a super delegate? Seriously.

UPDATE: Before I posted this diary, I searched for others on this subject, but must have mis-typed "Ybarra" because I did not see any others. I apoligize profusely for the duplication--it was not intentional. I hope you will visit those other excellent diaries on this subject.
